Hi, my name is Christa (Chris, for short). I'm 20 and live in Alaska. This is a multi-fandom blog, including Sherlock, Doctor Who, Supernatural, Steam Powered Giraffe, Homestuck, OFF, and Portal. There's also a lot of stuff that I like to stand up for, so be prepared for that. Don't ever be afraid to come to my Ask box. My ears are open and I don't bite. ♥

Customer with headphones in: Can I get a chai?
Me: Sure, what size?
Customer: A chai.
Me: What size do you want?
Customer: (getting irritated) CHAI.
He finally got what I was asking when I held up one of each of our different cup sizes.

Some “Cosplay is Not Consent” PSA posters I designed for Anime Boston. The top one will be on the convention center video screens with all of the other looped announcements.  The other two are extras.

(I volunteer for Anime Boston as the Publications Manager, which basically means I do all of the graphic design for the convention. OMG IT’S NEXT WEEKEND YOU GUYS)

Okay, occasionally when I notice that something has been re-posted I message the offender with a polite reminder about the unspoken rules of the tumblr community. I like to point out that people spend their time creating things, for us in the community to enjoy, and that we should respect that by not infringing upon it.
Most of the time I don’t get a reply. Today, however, I received the reply that you see above. Within there are two basic flaws of understanding that I would like to address.
1) The idea, very popular in fandom, that as members of the same artistic community we do not have the right to hold each other accountable.
What business is it of mine you ask? Let me tell you that it is not only my right to question, it is MY OBLIGATION to do so. It is my place, in any social-sphere that I inhabit, to stand up next to my friends and anyone else who becomes the victim of fraud. I will not sit idly by while people lose interest in/give up on their creative endeavors because they are not getting the credit that they deserve. I follow people who have created some of the most beautiful things and are faced with no options when their creations are re-posted, these people HAVE FEELINGS, they become discouraged and have no outlet through which to find justice.
Some may say that fraud is too harsh a term and I would have to disagree. Fraud is an intentional deception made for personal gain, plain and simple. I have an the RIGHT and obligation to point that out to you. I do not need to be party to the specifics, all I need to see is a repeated pattern of theft, and I will send you a (polite) message. Consider this a friendly reminder that we are all here to share the same space.
2) The second and obvious flaw in this reasoning is the erroneous definition of theft. To STEAL is to take something without permission.
You do not steal someone’s purse only to say that it’s not yours when given a compliment.
ACKNOWLEDGMENT DOES NOT CHANGE THE DEFINITION OF THEFT.
Why do people think that it is okay to just link to the source post? IT is not okay! Let’s say it again: it is not okay to re-post something that you did not personally create EVEN if you link to the source post, even if you link to the source post and say something lovely about the creator. NOT EVEN THEN.
Not only is it considered stealing by everyone, it is stealing. And it’s wrong.
At the real heart of the matter is a lesson to be learned. You should create for yourself, the more you create the better you’ll become. With time and effort you will be contributing to the community in a real way and not in a way that cheapens the experience for everyone else.
